Pair Of Large Porcelain Vases Kpm Berlin, Circa 1900
Provenance / Attribution
Pair of large decorative porcelain vases by KPM Berlin, identified by the marks visible under the bases: underglaze blue sceptre, red imperial orb with KPM mark, together with impressed marks and model numbers. The red orb corresponds to painted decoration, particularly polychrome floral painting.
Description
This pair of vases is designed in an elegant baluster form, raised on circular pedestal feet and square bases with brown and gilt geometric borders. The bodies are decorated with hand-painted polychrome floral bouquets, composed of large open blossoms, foliage, smaller flowers and naturalistic details. The floral compositions vary from one vase to the other, giving the pair a refined decorative rhythm while preserving their unity.
The flared necks are decorated with small butterflies or stylised insects placed around the upper register. The lateral handles are especially notable: they are modelled as fantastic creatures with dragon or griffin-like heads, sinuous bodies and scroll-shaped leafy terminals. These handles are heightened with gilding, which emphasises the relief, crests, wings and ornamental contours. The overall design combines the classical form of an ornamental vase with a historicist decorative language typical of refined late 19th and early 20th-century porcelain production.
Technique and materials
White glazed porcelain, hand-painted polychrome decoration and gilt highlights on the rims, borders, handles and bases. The glossy glaze, finely executed floral painting and crisp modelling of the handles indicate a carefully finished manufacture.
Dating
Late 19th century / early 20th century, circa 1900. This dating is consistent with the visible KPM Berlin marks beneath the bases, including the blue sceptre, the red orb decoration mark and the historicist zoomorphic form of the handles.
Condition
Very good condition. No visible damage, no cracks, no chips and no restoration reported. Minor signs of use beneath the bases, consistent with age and decorative display.
Function and display
A pair of ornamental vases intended for symmetrical presentation on a console, mantelpiece, sideboard or within a display cabinet. Their large size, white porcelain body, gilt details and colourful floral decoration make them suitable for a classical, historicist or eclectic interior.
