Napoleon III Display Case In Veneer And Gilded Bronze, Attributed To François Linke

Provenance
France, late 19th century. This display cabinet is attributed to François Linke (1855–1946), based on the quality of the bronze mounts and several elements of its decorative vocabulary. Particularly notable is the female mask placed at the centre of the upper frieze and flanked by caprine figures, a motif associated with the sophisticated Parisian furniture produced at the end of the 19th century and closely related to the ornamental repertoire employed by Linke and Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener.

Description
An elegant French Napoleon III style display cabinet of tall and narrow proportions, intended for the presentation of decorative objects and collections. The façade is articulated by two vertical uprights enriched with elaborate gilt-bronze floral falls and by a large glazed door opening onto an interior fitted with shelves.

The upper section is decorated with an extensive gilt-bronze frieze composed of scrolling foliage, fruit, animal figures and a central female mask. The corners are further embellished with finely modelled military trophies. Above, the openwork crest is surmounted by a gilt-bronze figure of Cupid: the seated child is shown with one leg folded and the other hanging freely, gently holding a bird between his hands.

The lower section is veneered in a carefully arranged chevron pattern and centred by a large oval silvered-bronze relief. The scene may be interpreted as an allegory of the grape harvest: several putti gather around bunches of grapes and fruit beneath vine branches, while a reclining female figure occupies the upper part of the composition. The contrast between the silvered relief, its gilt-bronze surround and the warm tones of the surrounding veneer creates a particularly distinctive decorative focal point.

Technique and materials
Wooden carcass finished with decorative veneers arranged in framed reserves and chevron patterns. Extensive chiselled and gilt-bronze mounts, a silvered-bronze central medallion and glazed elements. The applied bronzes are notable for their pronounced relief and variety of ornamental motifs.

Dating
France, late 19th century, executed in the Napoleon III and historicist decorative vocabulary characteristic of high-quality Parisian furniture of the period.

Condition
Good overall condition consistent with age, with natural patina, minor wear and traces of use. The silvered medallion retains an aged surface patina. Please refer to the photographs for detailed condition.
