Palatial Louis XIV Style Cabinet Attributed To François Linke

Artist: Attribué à François Linke

Provenance

Important palatial Louis XIV style cabinet, executed in the late nineteenth century, circa 1890, attributed to François Linke. The attribution is supported by the close relationship between this cabinet and a documented Linke model, particularly cabinet index no. 490, whose design combines a tripartite façade, rich gilt-bronze mounts, allegorical masks, spiral feet and a marble top. Linke was one of the most celebrated Parisian cabinetmakers of the Belle Époque, known for furniture of exceptional technical refinement, in which seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sources were reinterpreted with the decorative strength and sculptural quality characteristic of the late nineteenth century.

Description

The cabinet has a monumental architectural structure, arranged around a large central door flanked by two lateral doors. The façade is animated by carefully laid veneered panels, arranged in chevron and symmetrical patterns, creating a refined visual rhythm across the surface. The whole composition is enriched with abundant gilt-bronze ornament: an upper foliate frieze, moulded borders, female masks, child masks, scallop shells, acanthus scrolls, ornate escutcheons and strong lateral volute mounts.

The central section is marked by a female mask placed beneath the cornice, framed by scrolling foliage and volutes. A further mask appears in the lower register, reinforcing the vertical axis of the piece. The corners of the side doors are decorated with child heads and shell motifs, elements typical of the neo-Louis XIV and neo-Régence vocabulary used in high-quality Parisian cabinetmaking. The marble top, in a rare purplish tone, provides a refined chromatic contrast with the warm veneer and the subdued brilliance of the gilt bronze.

Technique and materials

Veneered wood with carefully arranged symmetrical panels and precise veneer work. Important gilt-bronze mounts, substantial, deeply modelled, finely chased and closely integrated into the architecture of the cabinet. Moulded marble top. The cabinet stands on six spiral gilt-bronze feet, a technical and decorative feature associated with furniture of the highest quality.

Dating

Late nineteenth century, circa 1890. The dating is consistent with the historicist aesthetic of the Belle Époque, the extensive use of gilt bronze, the architectural composition and the stylistic characteristics associated with furniture attributed to François Linke.

Condition

Good original condition. The cabinet retains its veneer, gilt-bronze mounts and marble top. Normal signs of use, minor marks and natural patina consistent with age are visible. The piece presents a coherent and well-preserved overall appearance.

Function and display

A statement cabinet intended for a classical, palatial or gallery interior. Due to its proportions, decorative quality and architectural presence, it is suitable for a salon, library, dining room, entrance hall or reception space.
