German Hunting Short Sword With Boar's Head, 19th Century

Provenance

German hunting short sword, of the Hirschfänger type, made in the 19th century. This type of bladed weapon was part of the traditional hunting equipment in Germanic countries. Worn during big-game hunts, it combined a practical function with a symbolic dimension, as the richness of the hilt often reflected the rank and status of its owner.

Description

An impressive short hunting sword distinguished by rich hunting motifs and a particularly sculptural hilt. The dark grip, deeply fluted in a spiral pattern, is accented with fine twisted metal wires. It culminates in an imposing pommel shaped like a wild boar’s head, carved in the round with particular attention paid to the coat, ears, and details of the snout.

The gilded metal guard features elaborate decoration directly inspired by the world of hunting. Its ends are adorned with zoomorphic motifs, while a wide, shell-shaped guard protects the base of the blade. This guard features a relief scene depicting a wild boar hunt accompanied by dogs. The other side is adorned with a large animal mask in relief. Together, these elements form a cohesive decorative scheme characteristic of the Germanic hunting tradition.

The straight, broad blade, which tapers gradually toward the point, features engraved or etched decoration on its upper portion consisting of foliage, arabesques, and plant motifs. The blade’s simplicity contrasts with the richness of the gilded mount and highlights the weapon’s dual nature as both functional and ceremonial.

Technique and Materials

Forged steel blade, engraved or decorated with etching. Gilded metal mount, worked in relief and in the round. Dark, spirally fluted grip embellished with twisted metal wires. The chiseling is particularly elaborate on the pommel, the guard, and the crossguard.

Date

Germany, 19th century. The weapon’s overall shape, the shell-shaped guard, the fluted handle, the zoomorphic elements, and the prominence of hunting motifs are characteristic of German hunting weapons from this period.

Condition

Good overall condition, consistent with the object’s age. The blade exhibits an antique patina, traces of oxidation, scratches, and partial wear on the engraved decoration. The mount retains a significant portion of its gilding. Signs of use and minor age-related wear. Sold without a scabbard.

Use and Purpose

Originally intended for hunting big game and for carrying during hunts, this short sword was also a representative element of a hunter’s equipment. Today, it can be displayed in a collection of antique weapons, a hunting cabinet, or a period-style interior.
