Provenance
Writing desk signed F. Linke, with the signature visible on the bronze mount of the top. Established in Paris, he became known for furniture of exceptional quality, combining the tradition of 18th-century French cabinetmaking with highly precise execution. His work is valued for the refinement of the veneers, the richness of the gilt-bronze mounts, the balance of the proportions and the very high level of finish.
Description
A refined Louis XVI style writing desk of elegant proportions and remarkable quality. The piece stands on four tapered, turned and fluted legs, embellished with gilt-bronze rings and collars. The apron, sides, top and raised gallery are decorated with geometric marquetry in rosewood, creating a regular parquetry pattern with strong decorative depth.
The upper section is arranged as a raised gallery, with two small lateral compartments fitted with drawers and a curved central panel. This panel is enriched with an important gilt-bronze ornament composed of ribbons, garlands, flowers and foliage. The front is also fitted with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts, including circular handles, an escutcheon, floral drops and decorative appliqués. The writing surface retains its original green leather top, decorated with gilt tooling and preserved with natural patina and signs of use consistent with the age of the piece. The desk is distinguished by the quality of its materials, the refinement of its gilt-bronze mounts and the elegance of its overall composition.
Technique and materials
Rosewood-veneered wooden structure, geometric marquetry, gilt-bronze mounts and leather writing surface. The gilding is indicated as original. The precision of the veneer work, the regularity of the parquetry, the quality of the bronze chasing and the attention to detail all reflect a high level of cabinetmaking.
Dating
Late 19th century, circa 1890, in the Louis XVI style. This dating is consistent with the decorative vocabulary of the piece, the quality of the gilt-bronze mounts, the geometric marquetry and the luxury Parisian furniture production associated with François Linke.

The gilt-bronze mounts, marquetry and polished wooden surfaces are very well preserved. The old leather writing surface has been retained, with its natural variations and signs of use.
