English Exotic Bird Tray, Worcester & James Giles Tradition, Mid-19th Century
An impressive English tray dating to the mid-19th century, decorated in the celebrated Worcester and James Giles exotic bird tradition. The body is of high-quality English manufacture, probably porcelain or stone china.
The design centres on a vibrant exotic bird cartouche set against a richly mottled cobalt-blue ground. Surrounding floral reserves, generous gilding and elegant Rococo forms create a highly decorative composition with strong visual presence. The substantial openwork handles are beautifully modelled and richly gilded, forming an important part of the overall design. Together with the deep cobalt colouring and confident bird painting, they give the tray exceptional display appeal.
A red mark to the underside may relate to the artist or workshop responsible for the decoration. This is an attractive decorative object that combines strong interior impact with an established English collecting tradition associated with Worcester and James Giles.
