Pair Of Japanese Arita Imari Porcelain Scalloped Charger Plates, C.1880-1900

An impressive pair of Japanese Arita porcelain scalloped charger plates in the traditional Imari palette, dating to the Meiji period, circa 1880-1900. Their large scale, asymmetrical segmented decoration and richly ornamented surfaces reflect the mature export style associated with late 19th century Arita porcelain.

Decorated in cobalt blue, iron red, green and gilt kinran-de enamels, the plates are arranged through fan-shaped reserves, angular cartouches and shaped panels inspired by Japanese fans, folding screens and textile designs. One charger features lively figural decoration with attendant children and landscape reserves in the karako tradition, while the companion piece incorporates cranes and floral motifs within the same layered decorative structure.

The reverse sides are decorated with freely painted karakusa-style blue scroll ornament, characteristic of Japanese Imari porcelain of the Meiji period. The pair combines strong decorative presence with excellent wall or cabinet display potential.
