Imari Porcelain Plate, Circa 1750

A porcelain dish with a scalloped rim, the molded edge is covered with a pale celadon green glaze.

The center, framed by a double blue band, features an underglaze blue decoration depicting a stylized landscape of rocks and leaves (pines, bamboo, and maples).

Around 1750, the wares produced in Imari—the main port for the export of Arita porcelain—frequently combined blue and white decoration, polychrome enamels, or, more rarely, monochrome glazes like this celadon. This pale green hue, obtained with an iron-rich glaze fired in a reducing atmosphere, is inspired by Chinese celadons and was prized for its softness and refinement.
