Ferdinand Levillain (1837–1905) is a sculptor and medalist passionate about classical antiquity. He distinguished himself in 1867 at the Universal Exhibition with a neo-Greek bronze cup. The collaboration with the bronze maker Ferdinand Barbedienne between 1871-1878 allowed him to produce renowned works. Levillain also collaborated with the Sèvres factory, creating medallions and medals visible today in prestigious museums such as the Louvre or Orsay. Awarded a Gold Medal at the 1878 World's Fair, then a 1st Class Medal at the 1884 Salon, and finally a Silver Medal at the 1889 World's Fair, he remains an undisputed master of the antique style in the decorative arts.
Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892) was a renowned French art founder. His foundry worked with great artists such as Barye (especially from 1879 onwards after the collaboration with Levillain), Carpeaux, and Rodin. Barbedienne received several awards for the quality of his productions, notably at the World's Fair. He also played a role in promoting the decorative arts. His company remains a reference in the history of bronze sculpture.
