Large Antique Imari Arita Porcelain Dish, Japan, Vase And Fence, Edo Period 1680–1720

Large antique Japanese Imari porcelain charger decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamel and gilding.

The centre depicts a vase filled with flowering plants placed behind a decorative garden fence, a classic motif in early Imari porcelain symbolising cultivated garden beauty. The composition is surrounded by sweeping floral scrolls and stylised foliage radiating across the rim. The colours are vibrant and well balanced, with rich cobalt blue contrasting against iron-red enamels and delicate gilded highlights.

The reverse is decorated with simple floral sprays in blue and iron-red and the base shows the characteristic double blue circle and unglazed footrim typical of early Arita production.

This impressive charger belongs to the classic Genroku Imari style, produced in the Arita kilns during the late 17th and early 18th century. Plates of this large size were often made for the export market and are now highly collectible examples of early Japanese porcelain.
