Khmer Cambodian Solid Silver Betel Lime Box, 19th Century Singa Lion

An antique Cambodian Khmer solid silver betel lime box dating to the 19th century, of small personal size and elegant proportions.

The domed lid is finely worked in repoussé, depicting a reclining Singa (mythical lion) surrounded by scrolling kbach foliage. The detailing is crisp and well-defined, framed by a delicate beaded border. The body is of simple cylindrical form, providing a pleasing contrast to the richly decorated lid.

Such boxes were used to contain lime paste, an essential element in the preparation of the betel quid, widely consumed throughout Southeast Asia. This example reflects the refined craftsmanship of Khmer silversmiths, combining functional design with decorative artistry.

The interior shows expected age-related oxidation consistent with use, and the exterior retains a soft, natural patina.
