Antique Vietnamese ceremonial sword, entirely carved in wood and lacquered, dating to the 19th century, Nguyễn Dynasty period.
The sword measures 81 cm in total length including the scabbard. Lightweight and fully constructed in wood, it was made for ritual, ceremonial, or performance use rather than combat. The form imitates a traditional straight sword, with an elegant zoomorphic pommel, a knuckle-guard, and a long straight blade, all carved from wood.
The surface is finished in dark lacquer with remains of gilding and yellow pigment. The sword has clearly been used, and shows extensive, honest wear throughout, including losses to the lacquer and surface abrasion consistent with repeated handling and ceremonial use over time.
Such swords were commonly employed in temple rituals, ceremonial dances, or symbolic displays associated with guardian figures, ancestor veneration, or courtly performance in Vietnam. The all-wood construction and very light weight clearly distinguish it from functional weapons.
