Chinese Yixing Zisha Chrysanthemum Incense Box, Wang Guojun, Shalong, 20th Century

A beautifully modelled Chinese Yixing zisha incense box and cover by the renowned artist Wang Guojun, dating from the late 20th century.

The compressed circular body and cover are formed as a many-petalled chrysanthemum, with alternating reddish-brown and dark brown tones accentuating the deeply moulded ribs. The cover is surmounted by a pierced chrysanthemum-shaped finial, allowing the fragrant smoke to escape.

The interior is covered with a contrasting white glaze. The underside of the cover bears the large impressed seal 宜興砂龍, Yixing Shalong, flanked by the smaller seals 王, Wang, and 國軍, Guojun.

Wang Guojun, born in 1948, is the eldest grandson of Wang Yinchun, one of the celebrated Seven Elders of Yixing Zisha. He began learning the craft at the age of fourteen and became an important inheritor of the century-old Wang family tradition. He is particularly accomplished in complex ribbed and segmented forms, beautifully demonstrated by this chrysanthemum-shaped box.

Good condition. There are some faint surface cracks within the interior white glaze.
