Antique Tibetan Silver, Ivory & Brass Travelling Eating Set, Ruyi, C19th

An unusually complete 19th-century Tibetan travelling eating set, housed within its original cylindrical brass container.

The finely pierced brass case is decorated throughout with a repeating geometric lattice pattern, framed at each end by stylised ruyi and cloud-scroll borders. It opens at both ends to accommodate the numerous utensils.

The extensive set includes solid-silver spoons, bowls, dishes and other implements, several ornamented with auspicious Chinese ruyi-shaped terminals. It also contains ivory-mounted chopsticks, forks, skewers and other utensils. The steel eating knife has a dark horn handle inlaid with silver pins and fitted with a silver terminal.

Travelling eating sets of this type were personal objects intended to be carried on a belt or attached to a saddle. Although Tibetan in character, this example displays the strong Chinese influence found throughout Qing-period Tibetan decorative arts.

It is very unusual to find such an extensive eating set still complete, intact and preserved in such good condition.
