Canton Lacquer Box – China – 19th Century

An elegant rectangular wooden box covered in black lacquer and richly decorated with engravings accented with gilding, crafted in the workshops of Canton in the late 19th century.

The lid, as well as the four sides, feature delicate palace scenes populated by figures set against a backdrop of pavilions and gardens, framed by foliage, plant motifs, and stylized dragons, all finely engraved into the lacquer. The quality of the craftsmanship and the richness of the decoration attest to the skill of Cantonese artisans, whose works were particularly prized in Western markets.

The interior, entirely lacquered black, is soberly adorned beneath the lid with a gilded design depicting two sheaves of rice, a symbol of prosperity and abundance. The box retains its original brass hinges and keyhole; the key is missing.

Both decorative and functional, this box was intended to store jewelry, documents, or other valuable items.

Condition: In good overall condition. Normal signs of wear consistent with its age: scratches, small chips, and flaking lacquer, mainly on the underside and inside of the lid. Key is missing. Beautiful original patina.
