Antique Ship In A Bottle, Four-masted Sailing Ship, Grande Chartreuse, Circa 1900

A charming antique sailor-made ship in a bottle, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The detailed model represents a four-masted sailing ship, probably a barque, with a black-painted hull, deck structures, spars and an intricate arrangement of standing and running rigging.

It is housed within a reused Grande Chartreuse liqueur bottle, retaining the sandblasted “Gde Chartreuse” lettering and stars. The bottle is further embellished with woven textile bands, adding greatly to its authentic maritime folk-art character.

The photographs really do not do this wonderful little work of art justice. I found it extremely difficult to focus upon the model because of the numerous reflections in the curved glass.

Length: 24 cm.
