Object description :

"Pair Of 18th–19th Century Spanish Or Portuguese Colonial Bone Carvings – Cleric And Nun"

A finely hand-carved pair of religious figures in bone, depicting a male cleric and a nun, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. Likely produced in colonial-era territories such as the Philippines or Goa, these devotional objects reflect the strong influence of European ecclesiastical traditions on local craftsmanship under Spanish or Portuguese rule.

Each figure stands approximately 12 cm tall and displays classic colonial attire: the male figure wears a tricorn hat and holds a book, evoking the image of a priest or missionary, while the female figure wears a veil and cross pendant, clearly identifying her as a nun. Both exhibit charming folk-style proportions, simplified features, and static devotional postures typical of colonial religious sculpture.

Notable age-related cracking is visible on the male figure, particularly on the right side of his hat and face—consistent with natural bone shrinkage over time. The surfaces have developed a rich, creamy patina with characteristic bone grain and flecking, confirming the material is bone (not ivory).

These rare carvings are fine survivors of early colonial Christian craftsmanship and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Spanish and Portuguese colonial a
