Antique Lao dha knife, Laos, late 19th to early 20th century.
This finely made Southeast Asian knife features a steel single-edged blade, mounted with chased silver collars. The cylindrical scabbard is entirely clad in repoussé silver over a wooden core, richly decorated with dense vegetal scrollwork and naga-inspired serpent motifs, arranged in horizontal registers and bordered by beaded and rope-pattern bands.
The workmanship of the silver is entirely hand-worked, showing confident repoussé and chasing characteristic of Lao silversmithing of the period. The blade shows honest wear consistent with age and use. The suspension cord is a later replacement.
Length in scabbard: 24.5 cm.
Such knives were worn at the waist as both utilitarian tools and markers of status, forming an important part of traditional male dress in Laos during the late 19th century.
Good condition.
