Antique Sri Lankan Kandyan Bronze Seated Buddha With Mandorla Ceylon

A finely detailed antique Sri Lankan bronze figure of the seated Buddha, created in the distinctive Kandyan artistic tradition.

The Buddha is seated in Virasana, the hero’s meditation posture, with both hands resting neatly in his lap in Dhyana mudra, symbolising deep contemplation, spiritual balance and inner stillness.

His monastic robe, or civara, falls over the left shoulder and is rendered with deeply incised, tightly packed parallel folds that undulate across the body. The ushnisha is surmounted by a stylised flame-shaped finial known as a siraspata, representing the radiant spiritual energy and supreme enlightenment of the Buddha.

The figure is framed by an elegant teardrop-shaped mandorla. Its richly worked, layered border incorporates miniature nested motifs resembling stylised flames or the protective makara-derived arches associated with Kandyan regional art.

A charming and particularly decorative small example of Sri Lankan Buddhist bronze sculpture.
