Ancient Bronze Buddha From Northern Thailand Or Laos, 17th Century

A small antique bronze figure of the Buddha seated in meditation in the Bhumisparsha Mudra (earth-touching gesture), characteristic of Buddhist sculpture from Northern Thailand or Laos.

The Buddha is depicted seated cross-legged on a stepped pedestal, with the right hand extended to touch the earth while the left hand rests calmly in the lap. This gesture represents the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the earth to witness his victory over Mara.

The figure displays stylistic features associated with Northern Thai and Lao Buddhist bronzes, including the elongated flame-like ushnisha, tightly arranged snail-shell curls, a serene facial expression with gently closed eyes, and a simple monastic robe falling diagonally across the torso.

The sculpture is cast in bronze using the traditional lost-wax process and retains a deep dark patina with areas of natural wear and oxidation consistent with age. The underside of the base remains open, as commonly seen in Southeast Asian devotional bronzes.

Such small bronzes were typically made for private household altars or portable devotional shrines.
