Japanese Horn Manju Netsuke Depicting Kanzan With Teapot, Signed Masamitsu, 19th Century

A finely carved Japanese horn manju netsuke depicting Kanzan (Han Shan 寒山), the legendary Chinese hermit-poet, smiling and holding a small teapot while wearing a wide straw hat beneath autumn foliage. The reverse is delicately carved with a temple or mountain retreat among clouds, and bears the incised signature Masamitsu (正光) of the Kikugawa school.

Beautifully worked in dark polished horn with a rich natural sheen and fine detail throughout — a classic and poetic subject rendered with humour and refinement, typical of the late Edo to early Meiji period.

Diameter: 4.3 cm

Condition: Very good for its age; minor wear and small natural inclusions consistent with material and age. Fine patina overall.

Period: Late Edo – Meiji, 19th century.
Material: Horn.
Signature: Masamitsu (正光).
Origin: Japan.
