Antique Persian Qajar Pottery Cat Vase, Iran, C19th–c20th Islamic Ceramic

An unusual and highly decorative Persian pottery vase or flower holder, modelled as a seated cat and dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The hollow-moulded cat has an appealing naïve expression and a circular flower receptacle projecting from its back. It is decorated throughout with stylised butterflies painted in bright pink, yellow and green enamels, outlined in black against a crackled white-glazed ground. The cat sits upon a rectangular base highlighted in vivid cobalt blue.

A charming and characterful example of Persian Qajar animal-form pottery.

Iran, 19th–20th century.

Height: 18.5 cm.

Condition: Overall good condition. There is a chip to the rim of the flower receptacle and several chips and losses around the edges and corners of the base, all clearly illustrated in the photographs.
