Lime Containers Betel Nut Timor, Indonesia Bamboo Early 20th Century

These finely carved and perfectly fitting bamboo (one in brass) containers were intended to contain lime powder for the preparation and chewing of betel quid. Betel chewing was an important and widespread practice in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
