Antique Bronze Elephant-headed Hindu God Ganesha Miniature, C19th
A finely cast antique bronze miniature depicting the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesha, seated within an ornate pierced prabhavali (aureole), dating to the 19th century or earlier.
This charming devotional figure shows Ganesha, the revered elephant-headed deity associated with wisdom, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles. He is seated in a traditional posture, holding a rounded object (likely a modak sweet), with stylised multiple arms. Beneath him appears his vahana (vehicle), the mouse, rendered in a simplified but expressive form.
The figure is framed by a decorative circular arch with pierced openings, surmounted by a kirtimukha motif, a protective and auspicious element frequently found in South Indian temple art.
Cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, the piece has developed a rich, dark patina with areas of natural verdigris, consistent with age. The underside is hollow, typical of small devotional bronzes.
A highly appealing Hindu god miniature, both devotional and decorative, with strong presence despite its small scale.
