Antique Thai Gilt Bronze Phra Chaiwat Pocket Amulet, 19th Century Or Earlier

A small antique Thai gilt-bronze Phra Chaiwat, or “Victory Buddha,” dating from the 19th century or earlier.

The Buddha is seated in meditation, with a tall pointed ushnisha and the hands resting before the prominently rounded abdomen. The figure retains considerable traces of its original gilding over black lacquer.

At only 7 cm high, this small protective devotional image was designed to be carried in an amulet case or kept in a pocket.

The base is slightly uneven. I have therefore added a small piece of removable Blu Tack beneath it so that the figure sits upright when displayed on a flat surface. The Blu Tack is modern and does not form part of the object.
