Antique Pair French Louis XVI Revival Gilt Bronze & Alabaster Caryatid Candelabra

A charming pair of French Louis XVI Revival candelabra dating from the late 19th century.

Each candelabrum is finely modelled in gilt bronze and centred on a dark patinated bronze caryatid figure standing upon a circular alabaster base. The figures support fluted classical urns from which issue two elegantly scrolling candle arms terminating in fluted sconces. Above each urn rises a decorative finial formed as a richly cast trophy of fruit, foliage and flame motifs.

The design incorporates many characteristic Louis XVI decorative elements including fluting, beaded borders, classical urns, foliate ornament and a pleasing symmetrical composition. The circular alabaster bases are further enhanced by pierced gilt bronze galleries and stand on four finely cast feet.

The contrast between the warm gilt bronze, the dark patinated figures and the white alabaster creates a particularly attractive and sophisticated appearance.
