Pair Antique Silver-plated Bronze Satyr Faun Bookends, Bacchus Wine, Late C19th

A highly decorative pair of late 19th-century silver-plated bronze bookends, each modelled as a standing satyr or faun.

The mythological figures have pointed ears, animal legs and cloven feet, with their heads crowned by luxuriant vine leaves. Satyrs were companions of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, revelry and fertility. Each figure stands upon a substantial rectangular bronze base cast with a wonderfully textured rocky surface.

The bookends are opposing, allowing the satyrs to face away from the books when displayed. Their sculptural modelling and bright silver-plated finish make them particularly striking objects for a library, study or collection of Grand Tour and classical works of art.
