Antique Chinese Luopan Feng Shui Compass, XIng Tai Ji, XIngning, Late 19th C
Antique Chinese luopan (feng shui geomantic compass) in lacquered wood, originating from Xingning County, Guangdong province, a recognised centre of traditional luopan manufacture.
The circular compass plate is finely inscribed with numerous concentric rings of Chinese characters in red and gilt on a black lacquer ground, representing the complex cosmological, directional, and divinatory systems used in feng shui practice. At the centre is the magnetic needle beneath a protective glass cover.
The reverse bears a clear maker’s inscription reading: “Xingning County, Xinghua Street, Xing Tai Ji workshop, made” (興寧縣 興化街 興泰記造). This identifies the piece as the work of the Xing Tai Ji workshop, located on Xinghua Street in Xingning—an important historical centre for the production of luopan. Signed examples with identifiable workshops are particularly sought after.
Mounted within its original square lacquered wooden base.
Dating to the late 19th to early 20th century.
Diameter: 14.3 cm
Good condition, with some small chips to the edge of the compass plate consistent with age and use.
