He XIangu "the Immortal Maiden " Antique Cantonese Polychrome Ivory Sculpture Chinese C19th

A fine Antique Chinese Cantonese polychrome decorated ivory carving depicting He Xiangu ou Ho Hsien-Ku "The Young Lady Immortal".

He Xiangu or Ho Hsien-Ku, "The ImmortalMaiden," is a Cantonese girl of about fifteen who dreamed that she couldbecome immortal by eating mother-of-pearl (or mica?) powder. After grinding the stones, she swallowed the powder andbecame as light as a feather. She discovered she could fly to the mountains topick fruit and berries from the trees for her mother. One day the emperor summoned her to court, but shebecame immortal (hsien) and disappeared. She appears only to men of greatvirtue.

This item was produced before 1947 and therefore complies with European Union regulations on the trade in ivory.

Condition - Good condition - The polychrome painted decoration is worn.
