Antique Japanese Lacquered Box With Chrysanthemum Motifs, Imperial

An attractive antique Japanese lacquer covered box. The rounded body and cover are decorated on a finely speckled gold-brown ground with repeated sixteen-petal chrysanthemum imperial mon alternating with peony blossoms and scrolling karakusa foliage.

The box is larger than a traditional tea caddy (chaire) and was most likely a zubako / kobako type or a kashiki.

The presence of the Imperial Mon suggests this may have well been once a gift from a member of the Japanese Royal family.

Height: 9 cm.

Condition: A few chips on the edge of the lid, as well as two visible flaws, outlined in red in the photographs.
