Antique Vietnamese Gilt Lacquer Quan âm (guanyin) Figure, Nguyễn Dynasty, C19th

A beautiful antique Vietnamese gilt lacquer figure of Quan Âm (Guanyin), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, dating to the Nguyễn Dynasty, 19th century.

The standing figure is depicted upon a lotus pedestal, wearing flowing robes and with a serene expression. One hand is raised in a gesture of blessing and reassurance, while the other is lowered in a traditional gesture of compassion. The sculpture retains extensive traces of its original gilding over a rich red lacquer ground, with black lacquer details to the hair.

The figure is carved in wood and displays the graceful proportions and devotional character associated with Vietnamese Buddhist sculpture of the Nguyễn period. The surface shows honest age-related wear and losses to the gilding, giving the piece a warm and authentic patina acquired through time and devotional use.

Height: 37.5 cm.

Good condition with age-related wear, losses to the gilding and lacquer, and minor abrasions consistent with age.
