Monumental Antique Chinese Bronze Ding Incense Burner With Lion Finial, Ming C16th, 66cm

Large and impressive Chinese bronze tripod incense burner (Ding) dating from the 16th century, Ming Dynasty. Of monumental size, it stands 66 cm high and weighs approximately 21 kg.

The vessel is cast in the archaistic style inspired by ancient Chinese ritual bronzes, with bands of taotie masks and leiwen geometric motifs decorating the body and neck. It stands on three substantial legs formed as stylised mask heads and is fitted with a pair of elegant upright handles. The pierced domed cover is surmounted by a finely modelled Buddhist lion standing upon a ball, a traditional symbol of protection and authority.

The underside bears a cast seal mark. The interior shows age and use consistent with a ceremonial incense burner.

A rare and impressive Ming Dynasty bronze of exceptional size, weight, and decorative quality.

Height: 66 cm.

Weight: 21 kg.

Good condition with wear and patina consistent with age and use. The handles have been re-attached.
