Antique Tunisian Silver & Gold Thread Embroidery, Ottoman Period, 19th Century

A richly worked antique Tunisian textile panel, entirely hand embroidered with silver and gold threads, coiled metal wire, flattened metal strips and numerous small sequins.

The symmetrical decoration is arranged in five vertical architectural compartments containing stylised trees and plants beneath pointed arches, surrounded by intricate geometric and amuletic motifs. The red and dark textile grounds provide a striking contrast to the densely applied metallic embroidery.

A fine example of North African textile art, reflecting the strong Ottoman influence upon Tunisian ceremonial embroidery during the 19th century. The panel may originally have formed part of a ceremonial garment, hanging or furnishing textile and was subsequently mounted for display.

Textile dimensions excluding the frame: 41 × 44 cm.

The embroidery edges are coming loose from the mount in places and require careful refixing. The old wooden frame has several historic, inactive woodworm holes.
