Antique Japanese Meiji Shibayama Inlaid Lacquer Panel, Signed Kōichi 光一

An exceptional Japanese Shibayama inlaid lacquer panel dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912).

The dark lacquered ground is finely decorated in gold lacquer and relief inlay with a charming scene of an elderly man and a young boy beneath overhanging pine and flowering wisteria.

The child reaches upwards towards the cascading wisteria while the seated elderly man holds a tokkuri (徳利), a traditional Japanese sake flask. Beside him is a basket filled with clams and other seafood, suggesting a relaxed scene of sake and freshly gathered food.

The figures and decorative details are executed in contrasting materials, with finely engraved and coloured inlay complemented by mother-of-pearl and gold lacquer. Particular attention has been paid to the patterned clothing, facial expressions and hands, giving the composition considerable character and movement.

Signed with the artist's rectangular seal mark, Kōichi (光一).
