Antique Chinese Manchu Flowerpot Ladies Shoes, Embroidered Silk, Qing Dynasty 19th C

A beautiful pair of antique Chinese Manchu women’s “flowerpot” shoes (Huāpéndǐ xié 花盆底鞋) dating to the Qing dynasty, 19th century.

These elegant shoes are made with silk uppers in shades of deep blue and purple and richly decorated with finely worked floral embroidery in coloured silk threads. The sides display scrolling foliage and floral motifs while the rounded toes feature decorative embroidered medallions typical of late Qing women’s footwear.

The shoes stand on distinctive white platform soles with a central heel block, characteristic of traditional Manchu “flowerpot shoes”. Unlike Han Chinese women, Manchu women did not bind their feet and instead wore elevated platform shoes which created the graceful swaying gait associated with Manchu dress. These shoes would have been worn with long Qing dynasty robes.

The interior is lined with cotton and the shoes retain their original layered construction with stitched soles and leather edging.
