Antique Tibetan Thangka Of Shakyamuni Buddha, 19th / 20th Century

A nice small Tibetan thangka depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, painted in rich mineral pigments. The Buddha is shown seated in vajrasana on a lotus throne, his hands in the bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of “calling the earth to witness,” one of the classic attributes identifying Shakyamuni.

Surrounding the central figure is a detailed assembly of attendant deities, bodhisattvas, and protective figures, set within a lively background of scrolling clouds and floral motifs. The palette — dominated by deep reds, greens, and blues — is typical of Tibetan painting of the 19th / 20th century.
The thangka is presented in an older glazed frame with traditional red borders. The back bears the label of Arthur Djoroukhian, Restorer of Works of Art, Poitiers, indicating historic professional restoration or conservation.
