Rare and well-preserved Tibetan gau (ghau) — a portable Buddhist shrine or amulet case, made of hammered copper with silver mounts, dating from the 19th century. Such shrines were worn during pilgrimage or travel as protective amulets, containing sacred relics and texts.
This example is remarkable in that it retains all its original ritual contents, including:
several handwritten Tibetan Buddhist texts in black ink on folded paper,
protective diagrams and mandalas,
polychrome tsakli ritual cards depicting deities and altar forms,
and a small clay tsa tsa votive tablet, likely representing a protective deity or stupa.
The texts consist of mantras, dhāraṇīs, and tantric diagrams invoking the blessings of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) and other protective deities. A complete and authentic devotional object of great ethnographic and spiritual significance, showing natural patina and signs of ritual use.
