Antique Tibetan Painted Wooden Mandala Panel Om Mani Padme Hum Buddhist Temple Ming Dynasty

Large and impressive antique Tibetan painted wooden mandala panel, 57 × 55 cm, dating from the Ming dynasty (15th–17th century), originally from a Buddhist temple or shrine.

Painted in polychrome pigments on a thick solid wooden board, the panel depicts a central lotus mandala inscribed with sacred bīja (seed) syllables in Lantsa (Ranjana) script. The centre bears the syllable Hrīḥ (ह्रीः) — the essence of Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig), symbolising divine compassion — surrounded by the six syllables of the famous mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum.”

This sacred configuration embodies the mantra of compassion and the purification of the six realms of existence. Such painted mandala panels were used in temples and monastic settings as devotional and protective images, inviting blessings and meditation.

Comparable mandala ceiling panels can still be seen in the Zhizhu Temple, Beijing — the imperial centre for Tibetan Buddhist printing and painting during the Yongle period — which exhibit nearly identical motifs and layout. See photos.
