Antique Tibetan Thangka – Wheel Of Life (bhavachakra) - Buddhist Monastery Teaching

A finely detailed Tibetan thangka depicting the Bhavachakra, or Wheel of Life, executed in mineral pigments and gold on finely woven canvas. This powerful cosmological image illustrates the Buddhist cycle of samsara (rebirth), featuring the three poisons at its center, the six realms of existence, and the twelve links of dependent origination arranged around the outer ring.

The wheel is held by Yama, the Lord of Death, symbolizing impermanence. The Buddha is shown outside the cycle, pointing toward the moon — the path to liberation (nirvana).

A green cartouche bears a hand-painted Tibetan inscription, which reads:

“This Wheel of Life is a most excellent golden depiction. It is accompanied by commentary according to the teachings. It shows how the six realms arise through dependent causes and conditions. It was created by the master artist of Riwo Nakha Monastery. Such is the intended meaning and origin of this image.”

The thangka reflects the Gelugpa school’s iconographic tradition and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1880–1930), likely originating from Eastern Tibet or Nepal.

The painting shows signs of devotional use, including minor pigment cracking and wear, consistent with age. No evidence of overpainting or restoration. A rare example of sacred Buddhist art, both visually and spiritually compelling.
