Object description :

"Antique Brazilian Balangandã – Afro-brazilian Amulet From Bahia, 19th Century (era Of Slavery)"

Authenntic balangandã (also spelled balangandan), a traditional Afro-Brazilian ceremonial ornament worn by Baianas in Bahia.

This elegant example, dating from the late 19th century, is composed of an openwork brass bar decorated with two stylized birds, from which hang several repoussé copper charms in the form of fruits and amulets — pomegranates, cocoa pods, gourds, etc. These motifs symbolize fertility, abundance, and spiritual protection.

Originating during the colonial period and the era of slavery in Brazil, the balangandã was worn by Afro-Brazilian women — both enslaved and freed — as a sign of identity, prosperity, and protection. Over time, it became a symbol of resilience, faith, and cultural continuity, closely associated with Candomblé ritual practices and traditional Bahian dress.

Lovely aged patina with traces of oxidation confirming authenticity. A rare and historically important piece of Afro-Brazilian heritage, illustrating the fusion of African, Portuguese, and Indigenous influences in colonial Brazil.

  • Origin: Bahia, Brazil

  • Period: Late 19th century

  • Materials: Brass and copper (repoussé and cast metalwork)

  • Dimensions: Approx. 16 cm wide (distance between birds’ tails)

  • Condition: Excellent antique condition with natural wear and oxidation

An exceptional ethnographic piece, rich in symbolism and history, representing the artistry of Afro-Brazilian metalwork from the colonial period.
