"gagon" Mask, Dan Touba People, Ivory Coast

"Gagon" type mask presenting a face with a large nose or beak extending into an articulated jaw fixed by leather ties. There remains some leather studded with upholsterer's nails on the jaw. Initially he must have had a beard made of animal skin. The eyes are narrow and surmounted by eyebrow arches meeting at the top of the nasal bridge. The gaze is lively and piercing. A nail is driven into his forehead. This mask has lost most of its initial black lacquer.
Wood with a patina of use (fragility and losses towards the carrying holes, metal, leather.
