Pair Antique Chinese Carved Hardwood Wall Panels With Phoenix And Birds, Qing Dynasty

A fine pair of antique Chinese carved hardwood wall panels dating from the Qing dynasty, 19th century.

The panels are carved in shallow relief with traditional auspicious decorative motifs. One panel depicts a phoenix surrounded by birds and clouds, while the companion panel shows birds among flowering plants. Such imagery symbolises harmony, prosperity and good fortune in Chinese decorative art.

Each panel is framed within a border of classic geometric key-fret decoration and retains its original carved suspension mount at the top in the form of stylised ruyi clouds.

The hardwood has developed a rich dark patina with a subtle reddish tinge which highlights the delicate carving and gives the panels an elegant and refined appearance.

These panels were made as decorative wall plaques and would have formed part of the interior decoration of a traditional Chinese home.
