Netsuke - Okame - Wood - 19th Century

Wooden netsuke depicting the Japanese Shinto goddess of joy Okame.
Okame is known in particular for having, through an erotic dance, helped the gods bring light back to earth by bringing Amateratsu (the sun goddess) out of a cave where she had taken refuge following a quarrel with her brother Susanoo.

Japan, 19th century.
Good condition, beautiful and light patina.
Note the delicacy of the goddess's facial expression.
