Netsuke - Impposing Shishi Au Tama - Ivory - Japan - Early 20th Century

Imposing ivory netsuke representing a shishi with front legs resting on a tama.

A subject originating from China, the shishi is a mythological animal very popular throughout the Asian cultural area, where it serves as protector of homes against evil spirits. A fanciful representation of a lion, it is the result of an artistic interpretation dictated solely by stories spread by travelers; because this big beast has never been present either in China or in Japan.
We therefore always find two of the attributes most characterizing the animal, namely its gaping mouth and its abundant mane, always represented curly. The rest of its anatomy is more like an Asian dog.
One of its legs is often found placed on a tama, that is to say a sacred jewel taking the form of an embroidered ball and representing omnipotence.

Good condition, note however the lack of the cartouche under the base which contained the signature.
