Ancient Indian Temple Toy Elephant With Mahout And Goad On Wheels, 19th Century
Antique Indian cast brass temple toy in the form of an elephant mounted on four wheels and ridden by a mahout holding an ankusha (elephant goad).
The elephant is shown caparisoned, with applied decorative bosses and stylised motifs across the head and body. The rider, seated upright, holds the traditional goad used to guide the animal, a detail that adds both charm and ethnographic accuracy to the piece.
Such wheeled figures are commonly referred to as “temple toys” and are associated with ritual and ceremonial use, as well as domestic devotional contexts. They could be pulled during processions or kept as symbolic objects within the home or shrine.
The piece is cast using the traditional lost-wax technique, giving it a pleasing irregularity and strong sculptural character. The surface displays a warm, naturally aged patina, with wear consistent with age and use. The iron axles show oxidation, and there is general wear to the high points, all contributing to its authentic antique appearance.
