Lacquered Figure Of A Buddhist Devotee, With Glass Inlays
Lacquered figurine of a Buddhist devotee, with glass inlays
Lacquered wood figurine of a figure with clasped hands
His monastic robe is inlaid with polychrome glass, a decorative element characteristic of the late Konbaung and Mandalay periods in Myanmar. The outfit is adorned with decorative bands enhanced by molded lacquer reliefs.
This figure is depicted kneeling, hands clasped in the Anjali posture, a classical gesture expressing deep devotion, adoration and respect towards the Buddha.
It probably represents Moggallana, one of the Buddha's two main disciples.
It is hand-carved in wood and covered in a traditional cinnabar-red lacquer, applied in layers over a base coat of dark lacquer. The head and body show traces of the original gold leaf gilding, which has developed a beautiful patina over time.
23 cm wide, 23 cm deep and 25 cm high
