Object description :

"Antique Tibetan Silver Prayer Scroll Case Gau Buddhist Sutra Mantra Auspicious Symbols"

This finely crafted Tibetan prayer scroll case (also known as a gau or mantra container) dates to the 20th century and is made from silver with intricate repoussé and engraved detailing. Cylindrical in form, it was used to house sacred Buddhist scrolls, mantras (such as the Prajnaparamita Sutra), or relics—providing protection and spiritual merit during travel, ritual use, or pilgrimage.

The outer surface is richly adorned with traditional Tibetan motifs, including lotus flowers, cloud scrolls, and the full set of the Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ashtamangala) — the conch shell, endless knot, pair of golden fish, parasol, vase of abundance, dharma wheel, victory banner, and lotus. These sacred emblems represent the spiritual ideals of enlightenment, protection, prosperity, and virtue.

Prominently featured around the circumference is the sacred mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" in decorative Lantsa script. This mantra, associated with Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), evokes compassion, purification, and spiritual awakening.

One end of the case displays a powerful Kirtimukha mask (also known as Chepu in Tibetan), a mythical guardian face meant to ward off negative energies. The lid is crowned with a lotus medallion set with a turquoise coloured glass cabochon, and is attached with its original chain.
