Peranakan Nyonya Belt Buckle Solid Silver And Rubies, 19th Century

A magnificent antique Peranakan or Chinese belt buckle from the Straits, made of solid silver, from Malaysia or Singapore, late 19th century.

With a large, domed, and multi-lobed shape, it features an abundant repoussé and chiseled design of lotus flowers, flowering plants, and leafy scrolls, surrounded by numerous small flowers.

The central relief medallion is set with seven faceted red stones. Although I am not a gemologist, I believe these stones are rubies.

The wide silver bar on the reverse side was used to attach the buckle to a belt or a piece of fabric. These buckles were part of the ceremonial attire of the Peranakan or Baba-Nyonya communities of the Straits Settlements.

Solid silver.
