Antique Chinese Patinated Bronze Page-turner Letter Opener Qing, 19th C

Antique Chinese scholar’s desk object, finely cast and carved in patinated bronze, in the form of a Chinese carved page-turner / letter opener / ceremonial paper knife, dating to the Qing dynasty, 19th century.

The upper section is sculpted in openwork with an elegant court lady (shìnǚ 仕女) wearing flowing robes and an elaborate coiffure, holding a round fan or mirror, a traditional symbol of feminine refinement and cultivated life. Beside her stands a child attendant, an auspicious motif associated with wishes for continuity, prosperity, and domestic harmony. The composition is enriched with stylised vegetal scrolls and cloud forms, lending movement and grace.

The long shaft is decorated on both sides with finely incised geometric diaper patterns interspersed with sinuous dragon or serpent-like motifs, symbols of power and protection within Chinese decorative art.

Objects of this type formed part of the scholar’s accoutrements, used as page-turners or letter openers, combining practical function with refined artistic expression. The quality of casting and carving, together with the rich iconography, indicate a piece intended for both use and display within a cultivated literati environment.
