Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Scholar's Brush Washer, C.1890

An elegant Chinese cloisonné enamel scholar's brush washer dating to the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890. Produced in Beijing, the historic centre of Chinese cloisonné enamel, it is a fine example of the traditional craftsmanship associated with the period.

The heavy copper body is of compressed globular form with an inverted rim and a short ring foot. The interior and exterior are decorated with stylised lotus blossoms and continuous spiral cloud scrolls on a vibrant turquoise ground. The inner walls are further enriched with a delicate fish-scale wire pattern beneath translucent enamel.

The decoration was created using the traditional cloisonné process, with fine copper wires forming individual cells that were filled with coloured vitreous enamels, repeatedly fired and polished to achieve their rich, luminous finish.

The underside is fully counter-enamelled in turquoise and retains characteristic historic firing pinholes and kiln pitting. The base is unmarked, as commonly found on Chinese cloisonné of this period, while the exposed copper rim and foot retain their original aged patina.
